Soundscapes of Zaragoza
Grabaremos paisajes sonoros de la ciudad tratando de capturar sonidos propios, aquellos que sus habitantes reconocen como tales y que construyen su identidad. Con ellos construiremos un mapa sonoro interactivo en formato Web que permitirá geolocalizar los sonidos en GoogleMap. Dicho proyecto Web permitirá posteriormente la participación ciudadana, de manera que sean los propios oyentes los que configuren el mapa sonoro de la ciudad. Trabajaremos con el patrimonio sonoro consensuado por los propios oyentes.
La cultura occidental se ha enfocado durante siglos en primar la percepción visual. Esto relegó a un segundo plano otras experiencias estéticas de carácter efímero como el sonido. Desde el siglo XX asistimos a un creciente interés por el fenómeno sonoro más allá de la música. Los sonidos medioambientales se revelan como un interesante objeto de estudio en campos que van desde la antropología hasta la creación artística.
Naturales o no, los sonidos que nos rodean forman parte de nuestras vidas y memoria colectiva. Se presentan como un valiosísimo material para la comprensión de las culturas y las sociedades que los producen, los utilizan o los perciben.
La actitud hacia el sonido de un lugar se debe estudiar para identificar aquellos componentes que merecen la pena conservar. El sonido, ruido o no, es parte de nuestro patrimonio inmaterial. Puede recogerse con fines estrictamente documentales o, en el caso de este taller, como materia bruta para el posterior análisis cultural, la creación artística, la construcción de una web participativa, y suscitar debate y cooperación en red.
In an attempt to capture the city’s own sounds, recognized by its inhabitants as such and therefore a fundamental part of its identity, we will record city soundscapes and then create an interactive sound map in web format that will allow the user to locate the sounds in GoogleMap. Later on, this web project will permit citizen participation, so that the actual hearers themselves will be those who continue shaping the city sound map. In this way, we will lay the groundwork for a sound heritage developed collectively by the actual hearers.
For centuries, Western culture has focused on favouring visual perception. As a consequence, more ephemeral aesthetic experiences, such as the sound, have been considered less important. Since the 20th century there has been a growing interest in the phenomenon of sound, beyond the limits of music. Environmental sounds have become an interesting object of study in many different fields, from anthropology to artistic creation.
Natural or not, the sounds that surround us form part of our lives and our collective memory. They have turned out to be an incredibly valuable material for the understanding of the cultures and societies that produce, use and perceive them.
In order to identify components worth preserving, studies of attitudes towards the sounds of specific places should be carried out. Sounds, whether or not they are defined as noise, are part of our immaterial heritage. They can be collected for strictly documentary purposes or, as is the case in this workshop, to form raw material for a range of activities, from subsequent cultural analysis to artistic creation and the construction of a participative web, where they instigate web-based debate and co-operation.
